  88. *December 5th, 2018*
  89. Special thanks to external contributors on this release:
  90. @danil-lashin, @srmo
  91. Special thanks to @dlguddus for discovering a [major
  92. issue](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2718#issuecomment-440888677)
  93. in the proposer selection algorithm.
  94. Friendly reminder, we have a [bug bounty
  95. program](https://hackerone.com/tendermint).
  96. This release is primarily about fixes to the proposer selection algorithm
  97. in preparation for the [Cosmos Game of
  98. Stakes](https://blog.cosmos.network/the-game-of-stakes-is-open-for-registration-83a404746ee6).
  99. It also makes use of the `ConsensusParams.Validator.PubKeyTypes` to restrict the
  100. key types that can be used by validators, and removes the `Heartbeat` consensus
  101. message.
  102. ### BREAKING CHANGES:
  103. * CLI/RPC/Config
  104. - [rpc] [\#2932](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2932) Rename `accum` to `proposer_priority`

  111. ConsensusParams.Validator.PubKeyTypes
  112. * P2P Protocol
  113. - [consensus] [\#2871](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2871)
  114. Remove *ProposalHeartbeat* message as it serves no real purpose (@srmo)
  115. - [state] Fixes for proposer selection:
  116. - [\#2785](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2785) Accum for new validators is `-1.125*totalVotingPower` instead of 0
  117. - [\#2941](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2941) val.Accum is preserved during ValidatorSet.Update to avoid being
  118. reset to 0
  119. ### IMPROVEMENTS:
  120. - [state] [\#2929](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2929) Minor refactor of updateState logic (@danil-lashin)

  236. ## v0.26.0
  237. *November 2, 2018*
  238. Special thanks to external contributors on this release:
  239. @bradyjoestar, @connorwstein, @goolAdapter, @HaoyangLiu,
  240. @james-ray, @overbool, @phymbert, @Slamper, @Uzair1995, @yutianwu.
  241. Special thanks to @Slamper for a series of bug reports in our [bug bounty
  242. program](https://hackerone.com/tendermint) which are fixed in this release.
  243. This release is primarily about adding Version fields to various data structures,
  244. optimizing consensus messages for signing and verification in
  245. restricted environments (like HSMs and the Ethereum Virtual Machine), and
  246. aligning the consensus code with the [specification](https://arxiv.org/abs/1807.04938).
  247. It also includes our first take at a generalized merkle proof system, and
  248. changes the length of hashes used for hashing data structures from 20 to 32
  249. bytes.
  250. See the [UPGRADING.md](UPGRADING.md#v0.26.0) for details on upgrading to the new
  251. version.
  252. Please note that we are still making breaking changes to the protocols.
  253. While the new Version fields should help us to keep the software backwards compatible
  254. even while upgrading the protocols, we cannot guarantee that new releases will
  255. be compatible with old chains just yet. We expect there will be another breaking
  256. release or two before the Cosmos Hub launch, but we will otherwise be paying
  257. increasing attention to backwards compatibility. Thanks for bearing with us!
  258. ### BREAKING CHANGES:
  259. * CLI/RPC/Config
  260. * [config] [\#2232](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2232) Timeouts are now strings like "3s" and "100ms", not ints

  265. encoded on disk.
  266. * [rpc] [\#2298](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2298) `/abci_query` takes `prove` argument instead of `trusted` and switches the default

  310. * [types] [\#2609](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2609) ConsensusParams.Hash() is the hash of the amino encoded
  311. struct instead of the Merkle tree of the fields
  312. * [types] [\#2670](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues/2670) Header.Hash() builds Merkle tree out of fields in the same
  313. order they appear in the header, instead of sorting by field name

  367. It also addresses some issues found via security audit, removes various unused
  368. functions from `libs/common`, and implements
  369. [ADR-012](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/blob/develop/docs/architecture/adr-012-peer-transport.md).
  370. Friendly reminder, we have a [bug bounty program](https://hackerone.com/tendermint).

  1044. Includes major updates to configuration, logging, and json serialization.
  1045. Also includes the Grand Repo-Merge of 2017.
  1046. BREAKING CHANGES:
  1047. - Config and Flags:
  1048. - The `config` map is replaced with a [`Config` struct](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/blob/master/config/config.go#L11),
  1049. containing substructs: `BaseConfig`, `P2PConfig`, `MempoolConfig`, `ConsensusConfig`, `RPCConfig`
  1050. - This affects the following flags:
  1051. - `--seeds` is now `--p2p.seeds`
  1052. - `--node_laddr` is now `--p2p.laddr`
  1053. - `--pex` is now `--p2p.pex`
  1054. - `--skip_upnp` is now `--p2p.skip_upnp`
  1055. - `--rpc_laddr` is now `--rpc.laddr`
  1056. - `--grpc_laddr` is now `--rpc.grpc_laddr`
  1057. - Any configuration option now within a substract must come under that heading in the `config.toml`, for instance:
  1058. ```
  1059. [p2p]
  1060. laddr="tcp://1.2.3.4:46656"
  1061. [consensus]
  1062. timeout_propose=1000
  1063. ```
  1064. - Use viper and `DefaultConfig() / TestConfig()` functions to handle defaults, and remove `config/tendermint` and `config/tendermint_test`
  1065. - Change some function and method signatures to
  1066. - Change some [function and method signatures](https://gist.github.com/ebuchman/640d5fc6c2605f73497992fe107ebe0b) accomodate new config
  1067. - Logger
  1068. - Replace static `log15` logger with a simple interface, and provide a new implementation using `go-kit`.
  1069. See our new [logging library](https://github.com/tendermint/tmlibs/log) and [blog post](https://tendermint.com/blog/abstracting-the-logger-interface-in-go) for more details
  1070. - Levels `warn` and `notice` are removed (you may need to change them in your `config.toml`!)
  1071. - Change some [function and method signatures](https://gist.github.com/ebuchman/640d5fc6c2605f73497992fe107ebe0b) to accept a logger
  1072. - JSON serialization:
  1073. - Replace `[TypeByte, Xxx]` with `{"type": "some-type", "data": Xxx}` in RPC and all `.json` files by using `go-wire/data`. For instance, a public key is now:
  1074. ```
  1075. "pub_key": {
  1076. "type": "ed25519",
  1077. "data": "83DDF8775937A4A12A2704269E2729FCFCD491B933C4B0A7FFE37FE41D7760D0"
  1078. }
  1079. ```
  1080. - Remove type information about RPC responses, so `[TypeByte, {"jsonrpc": "2.0", ... }]` is now just `{"jsonrpc": "2.0", ... }`
  1081. - Change `[]byte` to `data.Bytes` in all serialized types (for hex encoding)
  1082. - Lowercase the JSON tags in `ValidatorSet` fields
  1083. - Introduce `EventDataInner` for serializing events
  1084. - Other:
  1085. - Send InitChain message in handshake if `appBlockHeight == 0`
  1086. - Do not include the `Accum` field when computing the validator hash. This makes the ValidatorSetHash unique for a given validator set, rather than changing with every block (as the Accum changes)
  1087. - Unsafe RPC calls are not enabled by default. This includes `/dial_seeds`, and all calls prefixed with `unsafe`. Use the `--rpc.unsafe` flag to enable.
  1088. FEATURES:
  1089. - Per-module log levels. For instance, the new default is `state:info,*:error`, which means the `state` package logs at `info` level, and everything else logs at `error` level
  1090. - Log if a node is validator or not in every consensus round
  1091. - Use ldflags to set git hash as part of the version
  1092. - Ignore `address` and `pub_key` fields in `priv_validator.json` and overwrite them with the values derrived from the `priv_key`
  1093. IMPROVEMENTS:
  1094. - Merge `tendermint/go-p2p -> tendermint/tendermint/p2p` and `tendermint/go-rpc -> tendermint/tendermint/rpc/lib`
  1095. - Update paths for grand repo merge:
  1096. - `go-common -> tmlibs/common`
  1097. - `go-data -> go-wire/data`
  1098. - All other `go-` libs, except `go-crypto` and `go-wire`, are merged under `tmlibs`
  1099. - No global loggers (loggers are passed into constructors, or preferably set with a SetLogger method)
  1100. - Return HTTP status codes with errors for RPC responses
  1101. - Limit `/blockchain_info` call to return a maximum of 20 blocks
  1102. - Use `.Wrap()` and `.Unwrap()` instead of eg. `PubKeyS` for `go-crypto` types
  1103. - RPC JSON responses use pretty printing (via `json.MarshalIndent`)
  1104. - Color code different instances of the consensus for tests
  1105. - Isolate viper to `cmd/tendermint/commands` and do not read config from file for tests
  1106. ## 0.9.2 (April 26, 2017)
  1107. BUG FIXES:
  1108. - Fix bug in `ResetPrivValidator` where we were using the global config and log (causing external consumers, eg. basecoin, to fail).
  1109. ## 0.9.1 (April 21, 2017)
  1110. FEATURES:
  1111. - Transaction indexing - txs are indexed by their hash using a simple key-value store; easily extended to more advanced indexers
  1112. - New `/tx?hash=X` endpoint to query for transactions and their DeliverTx result by hash. Optionally returns a proof of the tx's inclusion in the block
  1113. - `tendermint testnet` command initializes files for a testnet
  1114. IMPROVEMENTS:
  1115. - CLI now uses Cobra framework
  1116. - TMROOT is now TMHOME (TMROOT will stop working in 0.10.0)
  1117. - `/broadcast_tx_XXX` also returns the Hash (can be used to query for the tx)
  1118. - `/broadcast_tx_commit` also returns the height the block was committed in
  1119. - ABCIResponses struct persisted to disk before calling Commit; makes handshake replay much cleaner
  1120. - WAL uses #ENDHEIGHT instead of #HEIGHT (#HEIGHT will stop working in 0.10.0)
  1121. - Peers included via `--seeds`, under `seeds` in the config, or in `/dial_seeds` are now persistent, and will be reconnected to if the connection breaks
  1122. BUG FIXES:
  1123. - Fix bug in fast-sync where we stop syncing after a peer is removed, even if they're re-added later
  1124. - Fix handshake replay to handle validator set changes and results of DeliverTx when we crash after app.Commit but before state.Save()
  1125. ## 0.9.0 (March 6, 2017)
  1126. BREAKING CHANGES:
  1127. - Update ABCI to v0.4.0, where Query is now `Query(RequestQuery) ResponseQuery`, enabling precise proofs at particular heights:
  1128. ```
  1129. message RequestQuery{
  1130. bytes data = 1;
  1131. string path = 2;
  1132. uint64 height = 3;
  1133. bool prove = 4;
  1134. }
  1135. message ResponseQuery{
  1136. CodeType code = 1;
  1137. int64 index = 2;
  1138. bytes key = 3;
  1139. bytes value = 4;
  1140. bytes proof = 5;
  1141. uint64 height = 6;
  1142. string log = 7;
  1143. }
  1144. ```
  1145. - `BlockMeta` data type unifies its Hash and PartSetHash under a `BlockID`:
  1146. ```
  1147. type BlockMeta struct {
  1148. BlockID BlockID `json:"block_id"` // the block hash and partsethash
  1149. Header *Header `json:"header"` // The block's Header
  1150. }
  1151. ```
  1152. - `ValidatorSet.Proposer` is exposed as a field and persisted with the `State`. Use `GetProposer()` to initialize or update after validator-set changes.
  1153. - `tendermint gen_validator` command output is now pure JSON
  1154. FEATURES:
  1155. - New RPC endpoint `/commit?height=X` returns header and commit for block at height `X`
  1156. - Client API for each endpoint, including mocks for testing

  1165. - Handshake replay is doen through the consensus package, possibly using a mockApp
  1166. - Graceful shutdown of RPC listeners
  1167. - Tests for the PEX reactor and DialSeeds
  1168. BUG FIXES:
  1169. - Check peer.Send for failure before updating PeerState in consensus
  1170. - Fix panic in `/dial_seeds` with invalid addresses
  1171. - Fix proposer selection logic in ValidatorSet by taking the address into account in the `accumComparable`
  1172. - Fix inconcistencies with `ValidatorSet.Proposer` across restarts by persisting it in the `State`
  1173. ## 0.8.0 (January 13, 2017)
  1174. BREAKING CHANGES:
  1175. - New data type `BlockID` to represent blocks:
  1176. ```
  1177. type BlockID struct {
  1178. Hash []byte `json:"hash"`
  1179. PartsHeader PartSetHeader `json:"parts"`
  1180. }
  1181. ```

  1197. - New message type on the ConsensusReactor, `Maj23Msg`, for peers to alert others they've seen a Maj23,
  1198. in order to track and handle conflicting votes intelligently to prevent Byzantine faults from causing halts:
  1199. ```
  1200. type VoteSetMaj23Message struct {
  1201. Height int
  1202. Round int

  1278. ## PreHistory
  1279. Strict versioning only began with the release of v0.7.0, in late summer 2016.
  1280. The project itself began in early summer 2014 and was workable decentralized cryptocurrency software by the end of that year.
  1281. Through the course of 2015, in collaboration with Eris Industries (now Monax Indsutries),
  1282. many additional features were integrated, including an implementation from scratch of the Ethereum Virtual Machine.
  1283. That implementation now forms the heart of [Burrow](https://github.com/hyperledger/burrow).
  1284. In the later half of 2015, the consensus algorithm was upgraded with a more asynchronous design and a more deterministic and robust implementation.
  1285. By late 2015, frustration with the difficulty of forking a large monolithic stack to create alternative cryptocurrency designs led to the
  1286. invention of the Application Blockchain Interface (ABCI), then called the Tendermint Socket Protocol (TMSP).
  1287. The Ethereum Virtual Machine and various other transaction features were removed, and Tendermint was whittled down to a core consensus engine
  1288. driving an application running in another process.
  1289. The ABCI interface and implementation were iterated on and improved over the course of 2016,
  1290. until versioned history kicked in with v0.7.0.
