  17. Tendermint Core is Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) middleware that takes a state transition machine - written in any programming language -
  18. and securely replicates it on many machines.
  19. For protocol details, see [the specification](/docs/spec).
  20. For detailed analysis of the consensus protocol, including safety and liveness proofs,
  21. see our recent paper, "[The latest gossip on BFT consensus](https://arxiv.org/abs/1807.04938)".
  22. ## A Note on Production Readiness
  23. While Tendermint is being used in production in private, permissioned
  24. environments, we are still working actively to harden and audit it in preparation
  25. for use in public blockchains, such as the [Cosmos Network](https://cosmos.network/).
  26. We are also still making breaking changes to the protocol and the APIs.
  27. Thus, we tag the releases as *alpha software*.
  28. In any case, if you intend to run Tendermint in production,
  29. please [contact us](https://riot.im/app/#/room/#tendermint:matrix.org) :)
  30. ## Security
  31. To report a security vulnerability, see our [bug bounty
  32. program](https://tendermint.com/security).
  33. For examples of the kinds of bugs we're looking for, see [SECURITY.md](SECURITY.md)

  45. ## Resources
  46. ### Tendermint Core
  47. For details about the blockchain data structures and the p2p protocols, see the
  48. the [Tendermint specification](/docs/spec).
  49. For details on using the software, see the [documentation](/docs/) which is also
  50. hosted at: https://tendermint.com/docs/
  51. ### Tools
  52. Benchmarking and monitoring is provided by `tm-bench` and `tm-monitor`, respectively.
  53. Their code is found [here](/tools) and these binaries need to be built seperately.
  54. Additional documentation is found [here](/docs/tools).
  55. ### Sub-projects
  56. * [Amino](http://github.com/tendermint/go-amino), a reflection-based improvement on proto3
  57. * [IAVL](http://github.com/tendermint/iavl), Merkleized IAVL+ Tree implementation
  58. ### Applications

  66. ## Contributing
  67. Yay open source! Please see our [contributing guidelines](CONTRIBUTING.md).
  68. ## Versioning
  69. ### SemVer
  70. Tendermint uses [SemVer](http://semver.org/) to determine when and how the version changes.
  71. According to SemVer, anything in the public API can change at any time before version 1.0.0
  72. To provide some stability to Tendermint users in these 0.X.X days, the MINOR version is used
  73. to signal breaking changes across a subset of the total public API. This subset includes all
  74. interfaces exposed to other processes (cli, rpc, p2p, etc.), but does not
  75. include the in-process Go APIs.
  76. That said, breaking changes in the following packages will be documented in the
  77. CHANGELOG even if they don't lead to MINOR version bumps:
  78. - types
  79. - rpc/client
  80. - config
  81. - node
  82. - libs
  83. - bech32
  84. - common
  85. - db
  86. - errors
  87. - log
  88. Exported objects in these packages that are not covered by the versioning scheme
  89. are explicitly marked by `// UNSTABLE` in their go doc comment and may change at any
  90. time without notice. Functions, types, and values in any other package may also change at any time.
  91. ### Upgrades
  92. In an effort to avoid accumulating technical debt prior to 1.0.0,
  93. we do not guarantee that breaking changes (ie. bumps in the MINOR version)
  94. will work with existing tendermint blockchains. In these cases you will
  95. have to start a new blockchain, or write something custom to get the old
  96. data into the new chain.
  97. However, any bump in the PATCH version should be compatible with existing histories
  98. (if not please open an [issue](https://github.com/tendermint/tendermint/issues)).
  99. For more information on upgrading, see [here](./UPGRADING.md)
