  1. This is the Debian GNU/Linux prepackaged version of the Python programming
  2. language. Python was written by Guido van Rossum <guido@cwi.nl> and others.
  3. This package was put together by Klee Dienes <klee@debian.org> from
  4. sources from ftp.python.org:/pub/python, based on the Debianization by
  5. the previous maintainers Bernd S. Brentrup <bsb@uni-muenster.de> and
  6. Bruce Perens.
  7. Current maintainer is Matthias Klose <doko@debian.org> until the final
  8. 2.3 version is released.

  11. A. HISTORY OF THE SOFTWARE
  12. ==========================
  13. Python was created in the early 1990s by Guido van Rossum at Stichting
  14. Mathematisch Centrum (CWI, see http://www.cwi.nl) in the Netherlands
  15. as a successor of a language called ABC. Guido remains Python's
  16. principal author, although it includes many contributions from others.
  17. In 1995, Guido continued his work on Python at the Corporation for
  18. National Research Initiatives (CNRI, see http://www.cnri.reston.va.us)
  19. in Reston, Virginia where he released several versions of the
  20. software.
  21. In May 2000, Guido and the Python core development team moved to
  22. BeOpen.com to form the BeOpen PythonLabs team. In October of the same
  23. year, the PythonLabs team moved to Digital Creations (now Zope
  24. Corporation, see http://www.zope.com). In 2001, the Python Software
  25. Foundation (PSF, see http://www.python.org/psf/) was formed, a
  26. non-profit organization created specifically to own Python-related
  27. Intellectual Property. Zope Corporation is a sponsoring member of
  28. the PSF.
  29. All Python releases are Open Source (see http://www.opensource.org for
  30. the Open Source Definition). Historically, most, but not all, Python
  31. releases have also been GPL-compatible; the table below summarizes
  32. the various releases.

  73. Footnotes:
  74. (1) GPL-compatible doesn't mean that we're distributing Python under
  75. the GPL. All Python licenses, unlike the GPL, let you distribute
  76. a modified version without making your changes open source. The
  77. GPL-compatible licenses make it possible to combine Python with
  78. other software that is released under the GPL; the others don't.
  79. (2) According to Richard Stallman, 1.6.1 is not GPL-compatible,
  80. because its license has a choice of law clause. According to
  81. CNRI, however, Stallman's lawyer has told CNRI's lawyer that 1.6.1
  82. is "not incompatible" with the GPL.
  83. Thanks to the many outside volunteers who have worked under Guido's
  84. direction to make these releases possible.
  85. B. TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR ACCESSING OR OTHERWISE USING PYTHON
